Poker Chip Distribution Guide: Stop Guessing

There is nothing more amateur than a host asking, "So... what should the blue chips be worth today?" Here is the definitive, casino-standard guide to chip values and starting stacks.

Standard Casino Colors & Values

Casinos use specific colors for security and consistency (the "eye in the sky" needs to know pot sizes instantly). Your home game should follow suit to avoid confusion.

White
$1
Red
$5
Blue
$10
Green
$25
Black
$100
Purple
$500
Yellow
$1k
Orange
$5k

Tournament Starting Stacks (T1000)

For a standard fast-paced home tournament (approx 2-3 hours), use the "T1000" structure. Blinds start at 5/10.

  • Red ($5): 10 chips = $50
  • Green ($25): 8 chips = $200
  • Black ($100): 8 chips = $800
  • Total: 26 chips per person. Total Value $1,050.

Cash Game Setup ($20 Buy-in)

For a cash game with $0.10/$0.20 blinds (playing for real nickels and dimes, or just representing $20), simplicity is key. You don't need 5 colors.

  • White ($0.10): 20 chips = $2.00
  • Red ($0.50): 16 chips = $8.00
  • Blue ($1.00): 10 chips = $10.00

The Golden Rule: Never give a player more than 30 physical chips to start. It creates clutter and makes counting stacks annoying.
